“One thing that surprised us is I think we had a misconception that interior design was for the super rich. This is one of the reasons we never hired an interior designer before. Turns out, it was affordable, we could fit it into our budget, and they were willing to take on a small job.”
A few things had to remain from the client’s old space – a pottery collection that was always on display and the artwork hanging on the walls. Extra special consideration was given when choosing surfaces, especially flooring, as they needed to stand up to the wear and tear of Toby, the couple’s beloved 9 year old Labradoodle. Improvements in lighting for the space, originally described by our client as being something out of a “Dickens era novel”, was an important aesthetic consideration in the design plan.

“The kids had gone and my husband and I had both retired. The whole house had a different purpose and function and we wanted it to be comfortable and appropriate for our new life.”
Key details in this project included best placement of our client’s First Nations artwork, one piece that was particularly large and a much loved Persian rug that the client wanted to keep in the same area. We made bold colour suggestions that may not have been previously considered. The clients request for two comfortable chairs with lighting, for reading by the fireplace, and a dedicated space for this self described “puzzle monster”, made this an incredibly interesting and fun space to work on.

The only piece we needed to consider in our interior design plan was a beautiful, light brown colored grand piano that our client had since childhood.Our client’s goal was to walk away from the Good Space process feeling confident to make the right interior design decisions for their space – with colour, fabric and furniture. Based on their answers to our extensive questionnaire and collaboration during our virtual meetings, we successfully designed a plan reflecting their “we love to stay home” lifestyle.
